Public schools play a vital role supporting newcomer families and children. They help children academically, but they also help them to adapt to life in Canada. Schools help parents and guardians and extended families to learn about life in Canada through their children.
The Board of the John Easton Mills Society has determined that supporting newcomer families and children through public schools is a key priority for this year. To that end, we will be developing resources for teachers, parents, and school communities to help them to welcome and support newcomers.
Our K-12 resource team is led by one of our volunteer Board Members, Dr. Claude Zesseu, a local school administrator and educator, with the support of our Board Chair, Bruce Davis, a former school board trustee in Toronto. We would welcome your feedback and assistance as this project grows. If you would like to participate in a volunteer committee, please let us know.
Bibliography on Intercultural Teaching and Intercultural Competencies (BITIC) enables educators to locate meaningful print, audio, and video content materials that help support intercultural pedagogy and foster intercultural competencies in learning spaces that are culturally, socio-economically, and linguistically diverse. BITIC is an invaluable empowerment toolkit for multicultural classroom educators seeking to valorize pupils’ unique cultural assets, promote active and productive co-existence, and encourage open, safe, and respectful intercultural dialogue in the learning environment.
